In this guide
To add a chatbot to Wix, your site needs to be published on a connected domain, which means a paid plan. Then go to Settings, open Custom Code, add the chatbot's script, set it to load on all pages in "Body – end", and apply. On a free wixsite.com address the script has nowhere to run, which is the most common reason a Wix chat widget never appears.
Our Wix install page has the short version. This post covers what you need before you start, each step, where the code should go, how to teach the bot your pages, and what to check when it doesn't show.
What you need first: a paid plan and a connected domain
Wix's custom code article puts the requirement in one line: "Make sure that your site is published and has a connected domain."
That article doesn't mention a plan by name, but the domain is the catch. Wix's domains article says: "You need to upgrade your site with a plan before you can connect a custom domain to your site." Customizing the free address doesn't count either; the same article says it "will not remove the 'wixsite.com/siteaddress' part of the URL."
So the order of operations is:
- Upgrade the site to a paid Wix plan.
- Connect your own domain, such as yourshop.com.
- Publish the site.
- Only then add custom code.
If you're on the free plan and only want to try a chatbot before paying Wix, you can't do it with a script. You can, however, try our side for free: the three-day trial has every Growth feature and 100 replies, and you can talk to the bot from our dashboard while you decide about the Wix plan. That dashboard test doesn't count against your replies.
One more thing to know before you start. Wix says that changing your site's primary domain deletes your code snippets. If you're about to switch domains, do that first.
Add a chatbot to Wix: Settings, then Custom Code, step by step
First, two things in our dashboard:
- Make your account and open your assistant.
- Under Your website, type your Wix domain (yourshop.com) and press Save website. The chat only answers on addresses saved here, so a script on an unsaved site stays silent.
Copy your script tag. It looks like this:
<script src="https://thebiggestnerd.com/widget.js" data-key="your-key" async></script>
Now in Wix. These steps follow Wix's custom code article as it reads in October 2026:
- Open Settings in your site's dashboard.
- Under Development & integrations, click Custom Code.
- Click + Add Custom Code at the top right.
- Paste the script tag into the text box.
- Give it a name you'll recognize in a year, such as "AI chatbot".
- Under Add Code to Pages, choose All pages. Wix says this includes pages you create later. It also asks whether to load the code once per visit or on each new page; leave the default to start with.
- Under Place Code in, choose Body – end.
- Click Apply.
- Open your live domain in a private browser window and look for the chat bubble in the corner.
- Check our dashboard. The status under Your website changes to Live within a minute of the first visit.
The widget loads asynchronously, so it doesn't hold up your page, and it draws inside its own shadow DOM, so your Wix theme's styles can't bend it and it can't bend them.
If Wix's menu names have moved by the time you read this, its own article is the source to follow. Menu names change; the three settings that matter (all pages, body end, apply) haven't.
Body – end vs head
Wix gives three places for a snippet: Head, Body – start and Body – end. Its article advises tracking and verification codes in the head and other functional scripts in the body, and says to follow the provider's instructions.
Ours: put it in Body – end.
- Body – end loads the chat after your page content, which is what you want for something that sits in the corner waiting for a question.
- Head also works, since the script loads async, but there's nothing to gain from it.
- Body – start works too. It just has no advantage over the end.
Whichever you pick, add the code once. Two snippets in two places give you two bubbles.
Teaching it your Wix pages: the Wix sitemap
Once the bubble is on your site, it needs something to answer from. It answers only from what you give it, so a new bot with nothing loaded will say it doesn't know. That's correct behavior, not a fault.
Wix already lists every page for you. Its sitemap article says "Every Wix site has a sitemap", that you can view it by adding sitemap.xml to the end of your domain, and that "Wix automatically updates your sitemap when you make changes to your site." Wix calls that file the sitemap index; it points to smaller sitemaps, and our importer follows those.
- In our dashboard, open your assistant and go to the Whole site tab.
- Paste
https://yourshop.com/sitemap.xml. - Let it read the pages.
- Look down the list of pages it found and Remove the ones you'd rather it didn't quote, such as a members-only page or an old promotion.
- If something important is missing, add it by address on the A page tab, or paste the text on the Paste text tab.
Sitemap import is on every paid plan and on the trial. If you sell through Wix Stores and have a Google Merchant Center product feed address, paste it on the Products tab so the bot can answer on prices and stock. The chat assistant page explains how it answers from those pages, and our guide to training a chatbot on your sitemap covers which pages to leave out.
When you change a page later, press Re-read next to it in the dashboard. It doesn't re-read on a schedule, so this is the step that keeps answers current.
Troubleshooting: Wix chat widget not showing
Go through these in order.
1. The site is on a free wixsite.com address. Custom code needs a published site on a connected domain, and connecting a domain needs a paid plan. There's no workaround for this one.
2. You're looking in the editor. Wix's article says the site must be published. Check your live domain in a private window, not the editor preview.
3. Your domain isn't saved in our dashboard. The script checks the address it's running on. If it's not under Your website, nothing shows. The www form and subdomains are covered once the main domain is saved.
4. The wrong pages are selected. If you chose Choose specific pages and then added pages later, the new ones won't have the chat. Edit the snippet and switch to All pages.
5. The bubble disappears when you click to another page. Edit the snippet and try the other loading option under All pages (loading on each new page instead of once per visit, or the reverse).
6. The snippet is switched off. Every snippet in Custom Code has its own toggle. Wix suggests switching snippets off one at a time to find a problem, so it's easy to leave one off by accident.
7. You changed your primary domain. Wix says this deletes your code snippets. Add the script again, and update the address in our dashboard.
8. Wix's security settings blocked it. Wix says that since December 2025 its frontend security measures may block older snippets until the provider updates them. If you suspect this, email us with your site's address and we'll look.
9. Wix Chat or Wix Smart Chat is also on. Two chat bubbles in the same corner overlap, and one usually hides the other. Pick one. If you want ours, remove Wix's chat from the site; if you'd rather keep Wix's, remove our snippet.
Wix's support team doesn't troubleshoot third-party snippets, by its own policy, so if it's our script that misbehaves, write to us.
What doesn't work
Being honest about the limits saves you a trial:
- No orders. It can't see Wix Stores orders, so it won't answer "where's my parcel". It can point people to your order lookup or contact page if one of your pages explains it.
- No bookings. It doesn't book appointments. If you use Wix Bookings, it can link to the booking page.
- No free-plan install. As above, a script needs a connected domain.
- Nothing it hasn't read. It won't guess your returns window. When it doesn't know, it says so and offers a short form; the visitor's details are emailed to you, and the question is added to your list of unanswered questions so you can write the missing page.
Plans start at $49 a month for 1,000 replies on Starter, with no fee to remove our branding; the full list is on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add custom code on a free Wix site?
No. Wix's custom code article says the site must be published and have a connected domain, and its domains article says you need to upgrade to a plan before you can connect one. A free site stays on a wixsite.com address, so the Custom Code option isn't usable there.
Why doesn't my chatbot show on Wix?
Usually one of three things: the site is on a free wixsite.com address, you're checking in the editor instead of the live domain, or the chatbot doesn't know your domain yet. With our widget, save your domain under Your website in the dashboard, then open the live site in a private window. If that's all fine, check the snippet is switched on and set to All pages.
Does Wix have its own AI chatbot?
Yes. Wix's AI Site Chat overview says that from March 2026 Wix AI Site Chat can no longer be installed on new sites, and that Wix Smart Chat is replacing it. Smart Chat has an AI mode that, in Wix's words, "answers visitors using your site's content and captures leads automatically". If your site is on Wix and you only need the chat there, it's worth trying before paying for anything else.
Will a chatbot slow down my Wix site?
Ours loads asynchronously from one small script, after your page, so it doesn't hold up the content visitors came for. It draws in its own shadow DOM, so it doesn't restyle your theme. As with any script, add it once, not in several places.
